This position is responsible for performing a variety of accounting functions within the PEOPLE section of the Accounting Department. Processes, inputs, reconciles and analyzes a variety of financial and accounting transactions and information ranging from simple to complex according to Union and department policies and procedures.  Uses one or more accounting software systems, spreadsheets and word processing software to perform required tasks.  Prepares and works with complex worksheets that are developed from source documents and accounting data systems for analysis and reporting. Creates schedules, reports and analyses for review by supervisory staff.   Maintains records, logs, and files of transactions and activities.

DUTIES

  • Match, batch and log incoming checks and support documents.
  • Process and deposit daily contribution checks into the various PEOPLE bank accounts.
  • Prepare daily deposits to PEOPLE bank accounts and input cash receipt transactions into the various PEOPLE systems.
  • Process direct contributions and other special receipts.
  • Create Jira Tickets, scan backup support documents and updating the Jira Tickets.
  • Create bulk upload files using Microsoft Excel and uploading the files into EveryAction.
  • Prepare spreadsheet for journal entries into the PEOPLE General Ledger.
  • Input data into FEC filing software for FEC Form 3X and other statutory filings.
  • Provide monthly detail analysis on various accounts for PEOPLE Department.
  • Maintain security of checks.
  • Reconcile and report any discrepancies found in receipt data across multiple systems.
  • Perform special projects and assist other PEOPLE staff as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Requirements:

Education and Experience

High school graduate or equivalent and one (1) year of bookkeeping or accounting coursework at the college level. Accounting degree preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in an accounting environment performing a variety of tasks or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Skills:

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks while working with minimal supervision; manage time effectively to meet deadlines and be self-motivated to learn and take on new tasks and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail and workflow output.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management, and others external to AFSCME.
  • Proficiency with a personal computer, 10-key calculator and in the use of Microsoft Office, with an emphasis on Excel, Experience using PC accounting software.
  • Experience with the use of an accounting software and EveryAction software is desirable.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
