WHEREAS:
AFSCME can make the difference in 1984; to make this difference, AFSCME must increase the Union's collective political clout on local, state and national levels; and
WHEREAS:
One of the ways in which AFSCME can effectively increase its political clout is the voter registration of AFSCME members and of their families who share the interests of AFSCME members; and
WHEREAS:
Many registered voters have been purged from the registration rolls since the 1982 elections; and
WHEREAS:
In many states voter registration laws still make the registration process more difficult for working people, AFSCME members and for constituencies historically aligned with AFSCME; and
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
hat AFSCME Locals and Councils work to register to vote at least 75% of AFSCME's membership prior to the 1984 Presidential election; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
hat each Council and Local set a legislative priority in 1985 to liberalize registration procedures in their respective states, with a goal of election day registration at the polling place as provided in Minnesota and Wisconsin and, as an alternative, a nonrestrictive simplified procedure for post card or deputized registration; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That on request the Political Action Department of the International Union provide Councils and Locals with samples of appropriate legislative language and supporting documentation to achieve these goals.
