WHEREAS:
One of the actions taken by the delegates at the last International Convention held in 1984 instructed AFSCME PEOPLE to set a fundraising goal of $2 million for the 1986 elections; and
WHEREAS:
With the help of many AFSCME locals and councils, who have achieved enormous gains in PEOPLE fundraising, PEOPLE has raised more money for this year's elections than ever before, but is still $150,000 short of our goals; and
WHEREAS:
Any shortfall will hurt AFSCME's efforts to help elect politicians who support public employees, and to defeat our enemies in public office, particularly in the U.S. Senate, where anti-labor incumbents from several states are in marginal races; and
WHEREAS:
The ability of AFSCME PEOPLE to play an even greater role in politics and the formation of public policy in future years will depend on the increases in PEOPLE checkoff and other fundraising activities that occur this year.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That this 27th International Convention urges all AFSCME councils and locals to increase their efforts before Election Day 1986, to raise the money needed to restore our government to the principles of fairness, compassion, and peace, and to ensure dignity, decent wages and good working conditions for public employees; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That the delegates to this convention will set the example by contributing generously to the PEOPLE activities at the 1986 Convention and throughout the rest of the year.
