WHEREAS:

The California Labor Federation has endorsed the passage of S7 and HR 371; and

WHEREAS:

The Act designates as wilderness, 81 areas totalling 4.5 million acres currently managed by the Bureau of Land Management; and

WHEREAS:

The Act expands Death Valley National Monument by 1.3 million acres and Joshua Tree National Monument by 245,000 acres and designates both as national parks; and

WHEREAS:

The legislation also creates a new, 1.5 million acre Mojave National Park in area considered by many to be the most scenic in the entire California Desert.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME go on record supporting S7 and HR 371 and similar legislation; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That AFSCME International support the coalition fighting for this legislation by lending its name as an endorser and by sending letters to Senators Pete Wilson and Alan Cranston urging their vigorous support.
