WHEREAS:
A strong local union depends on a functioning, active steward system; and
WHEREAS:
A strong union is one that aggressively enforces its contract and work rules, and the steward is the primary union official who carries this responsibility on the job, day in and day out; and
WHEREAS:
The steward undertakes many other tasks, serving as grievance representative, leader, communicator, and organizer; and
WHEREAS:
Effective training is one tool which provides the steward with the skills and know-how needed to carry out these many duties and responsibilities.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That the International Union continue to develop and expand its training programs for stewards, to include training for new stewards and more advanced training for more experienced stewards; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the International Union continue to utilize its very successful Local Union Training Instructor Programs (LUTI) to provide needed training to as many stewards as possible; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the International Union provide programs for affiliates to develop education and training for the purpose of recruiting stewards and developing effective, efficient steward systems; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That the International Union continue to develop new methods, as well as new training and resource materials, including written and audio-visual materials, to aid stewards in their ongoing efforts to enforce the contract and build and strengthen their local union.
