Sick Leave Banks

Resolution No. 89
28th International Convention
June 20-24, 1988
Los Angeles, CA

WHEREAS:

Many AFSCME members accrue sick leave benefits according to negotiate formulas in their labor contracts; and

WHEREAS:

Those sick leave benefits are often inadequate for members with low seniority or who face unexpected or even catastrophic illness or injury; and

WHEREAS:

Those same members could face financial hardship or loss of employment without adequate sick leave coverage; and

WHEREAS:

Some AFSCME locals have successfully negotiated the concept of a sick leave bank into which other members may donate their own sick leave for the good of individuals in need of sick leave; and

WHEREAS:

Sick leave banks protect less senior employees and allow members to voluntarily contribute to the common good of the union.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME councils and locals may want to consider the inclusion of voluntary sick leave banks in their contract proposals.
