Organizing Health Care Workers

Resolution No. 98
28th International Convention
June 20-24, 1988
Los Angeles, CA

WHEREAS:

AFSCME recognizes that the ever-changing health care delivery system has caused ever changing problems for the workers who are responsible for providing this health care; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME further recognizes that those problems, many of which are unique to the health care profession, often permeate and affect every conceivable health care profession — from health care aides to physicians; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME further recognizes that the problems faced daily by health care workers are often a threat to life itself, and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME further recognizes the dire need for health care workers to collectively address these problems; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has continuously been in the forefront of the unending struggle by these workers to adapt, coexist, and hopefully excel in this maze of modern medicine; and

WHEREAS:

As a result of AFSCME's commitment to improve wages, benefits and working conditions of health care workers, we are the largest union for health care workers in the nation - with 300,000 members working in health care services.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue its longstanding commitment to health care workers throughout the nation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME aggressively encourage organizations that represent health care workers to affiliate with AFSCME, AFL-CIO; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue to organize the unorganized health care workers in this country; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That AFSCME pursue these herein-stated resolves for all health care workers, professional and non-professional, in a determined manner and with all the resources at its disposal.
