Term Limits and Voter Rights

Resolution No. 25
30th International Convention
June 15-19, 1992
Las Vegas, NV

WHEREAS:

Opponents of public spending for public services have tried without success to shut down government services by having legislative majorities with their views elected to Congress and state legislatures; and

WHEREAS:

These same forces are similarly frustrated in their attempt to stop public spending by Constitutional amendment; and

WHEREAS:

The latest ploy of these anti-public spending reactionaries is to foster artificial "term limits" restricting the right of every voter to vote for whatever candidate they choose; and

WHEREAS:

The American political process already has a perfectly good system of term limits, called "elections."

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME opposes all attempts to impose artificial "term limits" on the American election process.
