WHEREAS:
Cesar Chavez was a prominent labor leader who fought tirelessly on behalf of working people, including community coalition support for public employees; and
WHEREAS:
Cesar Chavez' efforts led to improved living standards for many low wage immigrant workers in both rural and urban communities; and
WHEREAS:
There is little or no recognition of either Latino or Hispanic labor leaders in the United Sates.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME councils work with their subordinate bodies to introduce and/or support existing legislation that would make March 31, "Cesar Chavez Day;" and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME councils work with these subordinate bodies to help establish "Cesar Chavez Day" as a federal holiday designated by Congress for public agencies and to use the day to commemorate and direct attention to the history of the farm labor movement in the United States and in particular the role therein of Cesar Chavez.
