34th International Convention - Philadelphia (2000)

Coordinated Effort to Enhance the Image of Public Service

Resolution No. 83
34th International Convention
June 26 - 30, 2000
Philadelphia, PA

WHEREAS:

Public service employees deliver the services that make our municipalities, counties, states and, indeed, our country run. They provide health care services, deliver social services, protect our environment, maintain our infrastructure, keep us safe and secure, and defend our freedoms. They help make America a better place in which to live, work, and raise our families; and

WHEREAS:

Research has shown that despite decades of "government-bashing" by right-wing politicians and think tanks, public service employees are held in high regard by citizens nationwide; and

WHEREAS:

Despite this high regard, public service employees continue to be threatened with job loss through the privatization of government services, even while jurisdictions nationwide enjoy large budget surpluses.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That enhancing the image of public service remains a top priority for the International Union and its affiliates; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the International Union, through its Public Affairs department, and all affiliates will evaluate current efforts to promote public service and public service employees; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the Public Affairs department and affiliates commit to elevating the profile of public service employees by publicizing excellence in public service in print media, radio and television and other public forums; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That the Public Affairs department, with the assistance of affiliates, will investigate available public service awards. The International and affiliates will regularly make nominations, where appropriate, for these public service awards.
