WHEREAS:
A solid steward system is the foundation for a strong, active local because union stewards are the most visible part of AFSCME and are on the front lines in our local unions; and
WHEREAS:
Member involvement in union activities and union actions creates power in the workplace; and
WHEREAS:
Strong and effective unions are able to positively effect change in the wages, hours, and conditions of employment - the quality of life on the job and at home - that our members experience; and
WHEREAS:
Good training is required in order to assist stewards in their roles of enforcing their contracts and activating and mobilizing their co-workers; and
WHEREAS:
The AFSCME Department of Education and Leadership Training has developed a new steward training curriculum, AFSCME Stewards In Action, that helps union leaders and activists engage members to develop solutions to workplace problems and issues.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME councils and local unions are encouraged to provide the necessary foundation for a stronger, more vibrant union by conducting steward training programs using the new AFSCME Stewards in Action curriculum.
