Mobilizing Members for the Labor 2002 Program

WHEREAS:

The 2002 electoral slate includes gubernatorial elections in 36 states, U.S. Senate elections in 34 states, elections for all 435 members of the U.S. House, and countless state legislative and local government elections; and

WHEREAS:

The labor movement has been highly successful in increasing the breadth and depth of union member participation in elections through our ambitious program of membership contact over the past three election cycles; and

WHEREAS:

The officials we elect in 2002 will control the federal, state and local legislative agenda, including all of the policy issues that have a direct and concrete impact on the working conditions and quality of life of AFSCME members and public employees across the nation; and

WHEREAS:

Labor 2000's member contact program was successful in reaching over 90 percent of union members and Labor 2002 will build upon that success and provide the winning margin for labor-friendly candidates.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME locals and councils shall encourage all of our members to participate in the political process in their communities this year; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME locals and councils shall endeavor to get out the political message to all of their members through worksite contact, home visits, direct mail, broadcast media, electronic media, print media, and phone banks; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That all AFSCME locals and councils shall participate in and encourage our members to support the AFL-CIO Labor 2002 program in their states, cities and communities by donating time and other resources to these efforts.
