38th International Convention - San Francisco, CA (2008)

AFSCME International as Source of Shared Union Software

Resolution No. 28
38th International Convention
Moscone West
July 28 - August 1, 2008
San Francisco, CA

WHEREAS:
AFSCME represents more then 1.4 million working men and women nationwide; and

WHEREAS:
The councils and locals throughout the nation currently spend a large amount of their own members’ money on union-related software, such as website content management systems, grievance tracking software, member databases, document archiving and cataloging systems, phone banking software systems and many others; and

WHEREAS:
The precious resources that the councils and locals spend on software systems could be better spent in other areas to further the goals of the 21st Century Initiative; and

WHEREAS:
These types of software systems can be standardized and delivered to all councils and locals as a service via web-based interfaces much more efficiently and consistently at the national, rather than individual council or local level.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME International establish a committee to research the software needs of the councils and locals nationwide; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That said committee establish a goal and process for ultimately creating a “software system clearinghouse” within AFSCME International that all councils and locals throughout the nation can utilize.
