WHEREAS:
Public housing provides homes for the working people including public servants, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities and families who depend on welfare; and
WHEREAS:
Successive Republican administrations have attempted to destroy public housing by reducing or terminating the share of federal funding for public housing, thus forcing the reduction of services and massive layoffs of housing workers, reducing housing to disrepair for lack of funding and increasing problems of housing management; and
WHEREAS:
City and state governments have been unable to cover the massive loss of federal funding for such diverse areas as Medicare, section 8 vouchers, transportation and public housing.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME will lobby Congress and will present and support proposals directed to generate federal funding of public housing; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME will lobby the Democratic presidential candidate to ensure that proper funding of public housing becomes a priority of the next Democratic president; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That AFSCME will develop campaigns to educate workers and the general public on the importance of supporting and providing proper funding for public housing in the country.
