WHEREAS:

            Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel perform a vital and irreplaceable service for the American public; and

WHEREAS:

            During the past decades, EMS evolved from emergency medical transport to an essential role in delivering emergency medical care. EMS personnel are truly “first responders,” who play a significant role in national and homeland security efforts; and

WHEREAS:

            The hazards and dangers of EMS work should be fully recognized and that work valued by those served.  Whether responding to the unique emergency presented on September 11, 2001, in New York City, or entering an active shooting scene in Sandy Hook, EMS personnel put their lives and personal safety on the line every day.  Over 600 EMS responders have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS:

            Congressman Stephen Lynch has introduced a bill, HR 4690, to establish a National Emergency Medical Services Memorial Foundation.  Congressman Lynch has said, “I am proud to introduce this legislation to ensure that these men and women, their families and their loved ones are recognized for their ultimate sacrifice and to honor the hard work and dedication of all EMS providers nationwide.”

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

            AFSCME shall support the National Emergency Medical Services Memorial Foundation and other appropriate recognition of EMS personnel.
