WHEREAS:
Every person in the U.S. is entitled to affordable and accessible quality health care; and
WHEREAS:
Health care systems administered by government agencies, especially Medicare, have significantly lower administrative fees and premiums than those of private insurers; and
WHEREAS:
A single government payer could save hundreds of millions of dollars in administrative fees yet provide universal health coverage; and
WHEREAS:
Many states are now proposing legislation to provide funding and a mechanism for such a universal health care system.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME International and its affiliates support state and federal legislation designed to provide universal single payer health care systems, including access to long-term care.
